Most people just want the pain to stop. So we have become a nation addicted to drugs and all kinds of life-numbing distractions. We are taught that if you hurt, if you sniffle or cough or can't sleep, take this pill. And if you can't do what you love, watch somebody else or play this video. It is only natural that some people find extralegal sources for those chemicals or opt to spend their lives being entertained.
Now there are many cultures where suffering is not something to be eradicated at all costs, but is considered an indication that one’s life is out of balance. Seen that way, pain is clearly a friend come with much needed perspective to warn that your habits don't support well-being, that your life could use some course correction. First with faint whispers, and eventually with loud unmistakable shouts. That is a blessed service to offer someone and our bodies provide it generously. Like the oil filter commercial says, you can pay a little bit now or you can pay a whole lot later on. Judging from the plethora of degenerative disease in this country, we have chosen en masse to postpone the small maintenance bills, to pay instead one enormous bill “someday”. We ignore the initial clues at our own peril. I once heard (I have no way of knowing whether it is accurate, but it sounds true), that 80% of our "healthcare" dollars are spent in medically heroic efforts prolonging the life of dying patients an average of 17 days. Not in keeping them comfortable or helping them to prepare for passing on, and certainly not on keeping them healthy in the first place. Instead, we keep heart and brain and respiratory functions going as long as humanly possible, no matter what the quality of life may be. We are so scared of hurt and inconvenience, so untrained in paying attention, that we overlook the friendly advice. Small symptoms are not an annoyance to suppress, but loving advice from the universe. Thank your friend and listen closely.
